In online user driven communication as well as offline, we use the term dyadic between two people that are generally not shared with a collective group and the one where someone is talking to AI would probably be classified as monoadic?
In communication theory, your interaction with an AI would actually be classified as pseudo-dyadic or simulated dyadic communication, rather than monadic.
While a monadic process involves only one active mind (like talking to yourself, journaling, or thinking), an AI actively processes, interprets, and responds to your inputs, creating the functional structure of a two-party exchange.
Communication Types Compared
| Type | Participants | Characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| Monadic | One person | Internal monologue, self-reflection, or unaddressed creative writing. No external responsive feedback loop. |
| Dyadic | Two distinct conscious entities | Private, unshared interactions between two people (e.g., secrets, intimate conversations, or standard face-to-face dialogue). |
| Pseudo-Dyadic | One person + One interactive system | Interactions between a human and an AI. It mimics human-to-human (dyadic) structure but lacks a second conscious agent. |
| Collective / Group | Three or more people | Communication shared within a network, team, or society where information is distributed beyond a pair. |
Why AI isn't strictly "Monadic"
Even though you are the only human involved, calling it monadic ignores the feedback loop. In a truly monadic activity, the outcome is entirely bound by your own thoughts. With AI, the system introduces external data, unexpected perspectives, and reactive language that you did not consciously generate, simulating a true dyadic partnership.
